El Canto del Tapiz, Irán

"The Woven Sounds" - Carpet Pattern Singing in Iran - Demo of an upcoming documentary

"Naqshe Khani (Pattern Singing) in Iran"
This is part of our ongoing project "The Woven Sounds". In this phase, our focus was on Fars and Kerman Provinces.

Naqshe Khani (Patterns Singing) is a mechanism of singing the patterns of the carpet to the other co-weavers. This highly endangered cultural heritage has been a wide spread tradition in Iran, having its own complex lexical and diverse musical structure depending on the region it is being carried out.

To this date, no documents, studies or presentations on this topic could be found and the upcoming documentary is the first attempt to document this rapidly vanishing intangible heritage.
"The Woven Sounds" aims at documenting the intangible cultural heritage, the singing style, music styles around the process of carpet weaving in Iran.

"The Woven Sounds" is a research project at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OEAW) within the Commission Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage (VLACH) in collaboration with Roots Revival.
